Why We Hate Making Goals

Face it. We hate making goals.
Simply sitting down and thinking for ten minutes on what we want our goal to be is such a daunting task that it’s unbelievable. When I took some weight training courses, writing down my goals were a really big problem. I would lay this task off for months because I wanted to get straight to the action and simply pump those weights. But no, that did not work. Until I wrote down a specific goal that I wanted my biceps and chest several inches thicker, I did not see any improvement in my training.
The same goes with blogging.
The only way you’ll get those fantastic ‘before’ and ‘after’ shots is if you define goals. This will be a tough step for many, but simply take out a notebook and write about these things:
- Who?
- What?
- When?
- Where?
- Why?
- How?
What? Those are not even questions! Let me expand a bit…
- Who do I want to target?
- What do I want my blog to become?
- What do I want to write about?
- When do I want to achieve a blogging milestone and how am I going to get there?
- Where do I see myself in a year with blogging?
- Why do I even want to blog?
- How often do I want to write?
You’ll notice I went through the typical who/what/when/where/why/how routine that most of you learned in grade school. This technique is very powerful and I’ve learned to use it when I blog and design. These simple yet powerful questions are what make your goals complete.
The questions above are really open ended. This is because not everyone is blogging about the same thing, nor is everyone going to have the same goals. But do this daunting task once, and I guarantee it will give you an established foothold in your niche. Otherwise, you will burn out just like everyone else that does not set goals for themselves.
